There was an...incident that occurred a short time before I arrived in Johto. We called it The Calamity; it was a massive blast that destroyed large parts of our world. The Tazal Terminals - Ura territory, where I was born - took heavy damage, but Caelondia, the city I lived in at the time, was hit hardest; there were only four survivors. Zia and I were two of them; the other two were Caels.
The only solace that can be taken in what happened is that there was no suffering for those who were caught up in The Calamity - they died immediately, burning to death so quickly that their ashes retained their form until touched or otherwise disturbed.
But whether they suffered or not, our world has been shattered, and everyone we knew is dead. Including Zia's father, and the woman I proposed to the night before The Calamity struck.
I learned the cause behind what killed the city some time after the fact; it was something I should have been able to prevent.
